Vow Renewal · San Diego County

La Jolla

Warm, social, easy. Best if people are coming with you.

La Jolla is the most popular vow renewal setting in San Diego, largely because it is the easiest one for guests. If you are bringing family — and most vow renewals do — this is the location that works without asking anyone to hike, drive two hours, or navigate a sandy trail.

When is the best time of day to film at La Jolla?

Late afternoon. The coves face west and southwest, so you get warm reflected light off the water for the last ninety minutes of the day. Scripps Park has open lawn with the ocean behind it, which is the most forgiving setup there is for a ceremony with a group.

Do you need a permit at La Jolla?

Scripps Park and the Cove area are City of San Diego parkland, and gatherings above a certain size — or anything with chairs, arches, or amplified sound — typically require a park permit. A small group simply standing together and reading to each other is a much simpler situation. Check with San Diego Parks & Recreation for current thresholds.

What should we know before planning a La Jolla ceremony?

Parking in the village is difficult on weekends and holidays, so tell guests to budget extra time. The sea lions near the Cove are loud and they will be in your audio — I usually plan the ceremony position around them rather than fighting it. Restrooms and easy walking make this the most accessible option for older family members.

How much does a vow renewal film at La Jolla cost?

Founding rates are currently $750 for a two-hour film, $1,600 for a half day (4 hours), and $2,200 for a full day (8 hours) — reduced from standard rates of $950, $2,400 and $3,500. There is no travel fee anywhere in San Diego County, La Jolla included. Every option includes a cinematic highlight film, the full ceremony recording, digital delivery, and two rounds of revisions.

On permits: rules change, and they differ between city, county, state park and national forest land. Treat everything above as a starting point and confirm with the managing agency before you lock a date. I'm happy to walk through it with you.
